GD&T focuses on Feature Functionality         & Tolerance Zone Sizes

         

The engineering drawing language of GD&T
is the key link between members of the production team.

If used properly, it is an efficient tool that allows Designers and Engineers to clearly communicate functional design requirements
for piece part features.

This eliminates wasted effort and materials
by permitting team members responsible
for Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance to operate more independently
and efficiently within larger tolerance zones.

Y14.5 states that dimensions and tolerances "shall be selected and arranged to suit the function and mating relationship of a part".
Frequent references during each WMES course come back to "What is the function of the feature?", and "What relationship does the feature have to the other part features?"
